Our Mission

Amistad, a word meaning friendship in Spanish, is a nonprofit public charity helping to fund several humanitarian, self-help, and education programs around the world. We are the rich and the poor who've joined hands to build self-sustaining, healthful, and economically viable communities.

Our Work

  • We sponsor Buddha's Smile School for untouchable caste children and children of lepers in Sarnath, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Founder and director, Rajan Kaur.

  • Urmi Basu's New Light Shelters for children of sex workers in Kolkata, India.

  • Sponsorship of Amri elementary school in Kenya, a free elementary school founded by Amri community members for AIDS orphans, and at-risk children. We help to sponsor Youth Action for Rural Development (YARD) in Thika, Kenya, and Common Ground Program/Pathfinder Academy in Kitale, Kenya. We help to sponsor Grow Biointensive Agriculture Centre, Kenya (G-BIACK,) a program to teach AIDS widows and at-risk teen how to grow food sustainably, tailoring and bead-work. We also sponsor agriculture, small animal husbandry classes at Community Initiatives for Rural Development/Kenya (CIFORD.)

  • Mongolia: Amistad assists Children Ger School for impoverishing children in the yurt district of Ulaan Baator.

  • Lambano Sanctuary for HIV+ infants and children in Johannesburg, South Africa.

  • Medical and humanitarian outreach for Mexico's Huichol Indians.
